SINGAPORE – The Intellectual Property Rights Branch (IPRB) of the Singapore Police, supported by the Alliance for Entertainment and Creativity (ACE), undertook enforcement action Tuesday at Sim Lim Square in central Singapore, seizing more than 2,500 illicit streaming devices (ISDs). The seized ISDs, which according to the Police had an estimated street value of SGD$ 500,000 (about USD $350,600), made infringing movies and TV shows available to unsuspecting consumers. The Police action led to the arrest of 17 people. ACE continues to assist the Singapore Police with their inquiries.
In response to the IPRB’s enforcement action, Jan van Voorn, Executive Vice President and Global Content Protection Chief at the Motion Picture Association (MPA) and Head of ACE, said:
“ACE applauds the successful action taken this week by the Intellectual Property Rights Branch (IPRB) of the Singaporean police against retailers of illicit streaming devices located at Sim Lim Square. ACE is proud to support actions by the IPRB, and other law enforcement agencies around the world, as a key part of our global campaign to combat piracy and protect legal content platforms.
“As a key part of ACE’s anti-piracy strategy, we continually work to make consumers aware of how to identify illicit streaming devices, IPTV services and piracy websites. Such piracy services put consumers at risk of malware, undermine investment, reduce tax revenue, and stifle creativity.”
