Working alongside the Thai Police and local content provider True Visions, the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (ACE), the world’s leading coalition dedicated to protecting the dynamic legal ecosystem and reducing digital piracy, shut down Thailand-operated piracy website We-Play.live. This notorious piracy streaming service which provided illicit access to both sports and entertainment content, had been operational for more than four years with average monthly global visits of 2.8 million.
The Thailand Police Economic Suppression Department estimated that the website caused more than USD 1.4 million in damages per month to the local and international content industries . The site illegally monetized both subscription fees as well as advertising revenues from illicit gambling forums and websites. The 26 year old operator of the site has been arrested and will be prosecuted for copyright and ancillary criminal offences.
“ACE commends the Thai Police for their continued collaboration and the effective takedown of this infamous streaming website. Streaming piracy websites and IPTV piracy services such as We-Play put consumers at risk of egregious malware, undermine investment, reduce tax contributions to governments, and stifle creativity. The operator of the We-Play network of sites deserves his day in court.” said Jan van Voorn, Executive Vice President and Chief of Global Content Protection for ACE.
