Los Angeles – Two operators of the Uruguay-based piracy outfit, Pelispedia, were each sentenced this week to three years and four months jail time by the prosecutor’s office in Montevideo. Approximately $500,000 USD in assets from their criminal activity were seized and transferred to the government of Uruguay, as determined by the laws related to money laundering in the country.
Pelispedia and its associated websites were among the top 100 most visited websites in Latin America, receiving more than 40 million visits per month. The outfit illegally distributed unauthorized motion pictures and television shows.
The following is a statement from Charles Rivkin, Chairman and CEO of the Motion Picture Association of America:
“We applaud the work of our partners at Interpol and law enforcement agencies in Uruguay for the successful legal action against a major Latin American piracy organization, and thank the court for acting swiftly to stop this criminal network. ACE is committed to protecting the legitimate international market for creative content through a range of tactics to reduce piracy which protect creators and benefit audiences by ensuring that these legal services can continue to thrive.”
